New Fiction in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine

“Dark Thread, Loose Strands”

My story “Dark Thread, Loose Strands” appears in the May/June 2024 issue of Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine—and what an honor to receive cover mention for this issue as well.

The story was originally written in response to a photograph by Henry Wessel from his 2012 collection Incidents; see that image below, “Incidents 006,” now part of the collection of London’s Tate Gallery.

“Dark Thread, Loose Strands” shuttles between three perspectives: two boys who seem to be fighting in a schoolyard, and then the driver of a passing car who witnesses the incident.

In a publishing twist, a French translation of the story appeared in 2019 in a small volume from Mack Books, produced in conjunction with an exhibition of Wessel’s work at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris. That anthology also featured stories by Ivy Pochoda and Alexander MacLeod.

The EQMM publication marks its first English-language publication.
