Independence Day isn’t until Saturday, but today kicks off Independents Week, a chance for locally owned businesses — independent bookstores at the top of that list — to tout their service to their customers and their contributions to local economies. The American Booksellers Association‘s online pub “Bookselling This Week” featured an article on this initiative, quoting Nancy Olson of Raleigh’s Quail Ridge Books and focussing on additional Raleigh efforts urged on by mayor Charles Meeker. Representatives of other bookstores in Buffalo, New Orleans, and Frisco, Colorado are also quoted, as is a rep from IndieBound, helping to spearhead efforts.
